Alaska Scene

Alaska photo

Standing at the edge of a small "lake" in the middle of Matanuska Glacier, formed by the summer heat melting the snow and ice, there is a hundred feet of ice beneath your feet at this location.  Located in Southcentral Alaska, Matanuska Glacier is one of the most rapidly retreating glaciers in the world.  The sunny 65 degree (F) heat of this late summer day is being interrupted by an approaching storm.  Photo copyright 1993-98 Stephen Kangas.
